About Me:
Hi! My name is Ryan Hoover and thank you for visiting my site! I’m a video editor/ animation concept artist/ screenwriter from Millersville, MD (a small town around a half-hour or so from Baltimore). I desire to work in the Pre-Production or Post-Production side at a studio specializing in 2-D animation production on animated television series, short films or feature. I am pursuing a career as either a production artist, script writer or video editor. While I’m just starting my journey, my hope is to someday direct my own short film or, later on, create my own animated film or series.
My Story
My love of animation and film has been with me as long as I can remember, grown out of my parents love of Disney and my longstanding interest in art. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I feel my passion stems from the medium’s connections to escapism. Every new film, series or short I saw introduced me to new worlds, characters, emotions, and ideas that stuck with me long after their runtime ended. I related to these characters like I would any of my closest friends or relatives. No matter what trials and tough times I had to face in life, I could always depend on these shows and characters to pick me up and give me a good time. When I wasn’t watching a show or movie, I’d often be learning how it was made or creating my own adventures with the characters in my toybox. This gave me a passion for creativity and the desire to work in animation and film, inspiring me to create characters and stories to inspire others in the same way these projects did for me.
My passions led me to study animation visual development and film production at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia, where I received my BFA in May of 2021 and MA in August 2022. Throughout the program, I was exposed me to all the aspects that go into the development processes of both live-action and animated projects, such as producing, screenwriting, scheduling and budgeting, world-building, character design, concept art, storyboarding and animatics, video editing and post-production. I’ve managed several shoots as a key producer, learning the importance of creating a system where all potential problems have solutions and how to take charge of a situation to get the best possible outcome for your production. I gained experience working on a variety of projects from comedies, to dramas to documentaries to bumpers to animated shorts.
As an artist, I value appeal over everything else. I believe the best kind of art has the ability appeal to anyone of any age, and my artwork uses a simple, colorful style to communicate that belief. When creating a character, I seek to infuse them with lots of charm and relatability, be it through posing, expressions or backstory. I also champion innovation, be it through providing an original premise, style or take for an animated project, formulating new, creative approaches to time-tested concepts or making bold, unique choices in storyboarding or editing a film or shot. Whenever I’m in a creative rut, I’ll look back at my favorite shows and movies for inspiration. Overall, I’m driven by the idea and satisfaction of taking something in my head and having it drawn or written out right in front of me.
